Metrix Group Shifts Point of View with MotionPerf®
The sneak-peek reveal of Metrix Group’s new Perforated Metal Façade Product MotionPerf® proves so unique, you literally can’t walk past it without it engaging you.
Melbourne, Victoria, September 7th, 2023
Metrix Group hosted a select group of 85 architects, artists and industry specialists to experience recently-patented, onlooker-activated façade product, MotionPerf®; live at the Sculptform Studio in Melbourne.
The product works by utilising a combination of moiré and lenticular effect to create the illusion of large-scale movement in the façade as you pass by the screen.
Speakers from several practices including Façade Specialist Bobby Wei (Bates Smart), Biophilic Design and Sustainability Lead, Shanica Saenrak Hall (NBRS) and Perth-based contemporary artist, Tom Mùller also shared their thoughts on the future of such products and their place in the built environment.

Why: Metrix Group have been busy researching, developing and preparing to launch new products and systems to compliment our extensive perforated metal range.
There are a lot of companies putting holes in metal; we create bespoke architectural solutions, manufactured right here in Australia. While many architectural projects only call for the tried and tested performance of 2D perforated holes – we hope to offer our partners increased thermal performance along with texture, dappled light, shadow play and illusion utilising our 3D artform® products. Further, if you’re looking for complete captivation, you literally can’t go past motionPerf® – activated by onlooker movement and a guaranteed way to engage all parts of the screens environment.
And while these are still stationary facades, the movement and engagement created by the infusion of art and design is really unparalleled in this field. Best seen live 
Special Notes: Each lanyard was designed and punched at Metrix Group, then anodised in a range of 6 unique colours for guests to choose at their moment of arrival.
We had 8 main sample displays including a 2.4 m wide media wall called Metrixgram; not including 20 A3 samples, punchings and tooling scattered all throughout the beautiful Sculptform Studio.

Bobby Wei
Tom Mùller
Shanica Saenrak Hall
Bobby is an Associate Director at Bates Smart and a leading specialist in façade design. He is a key member of the practice’s façade team working on the external fabric of buildings and has experience across commercial, hospitality, institutional and residential sectors.
Bobby has contributed to significant projects including the new Australian Embassy in Washington DC; Melbourne’s first 6 star Green Star office building, 171 Collins Street, as well as the benchmark sustainable office development, 435 Bourke Street.
Through his rigorous approach, meticulous attention to detail and strong design sensibilities, Bobby is committed to resolving complex architectural issues and achieving high-quality design outcomes.
Tom is an established multi-disciplinary artist with an active international practice spanning the realms of site-responsive and temporal projects.
His work has been included in major exhibitions and institutions including ‘The National’ at Carriageworks, Art Basel, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Adelaide Biennial, WA Now at the Art Gallery of WA and the Northern Alps Triennale in Japan.
Further to this, Tom also worked with Metrix Group and Hassell Studio Perth to create the artistic 3D facade – The Light Clock for the ABN Group Headquarters – an award winning building in the heart of Perth.
In parallel to his personal practice, Tom is the Artistic Director and Co-Founder of the Fremantle Biennale.
As National Sustainability Lead, Shanica has driven the NBRS sustainability framework with her knowledge from 17 years of architecture and her sustainability expertise. She dedicates her time to improving multiple sustainability systems locally and internationally. Her contributions include her work as an advisor for IWBI, WELL Health Equity and Community Concept, a member of the GBCA Green Star People & Wellbeing Expert Reference Panel and Living Future Institute Australia’s Technical Working Group. She has led and developed designs for projects across the community, sports and leisure, health, senior living, education, and residential sectors.
Shanica is a registered architect, Living Future Accredited Professional, Certified Passivhaus Designer, WELL Accredited Professional, and Green Star Accredited Professional (in Buildings, Communities and Performance). She is the 2022 finalist of the NAWIC NSW Awards for Excellence, and CPB award for Contribution to Sustainability. She is especially interested in biophilic design, and healthy, equitable and low-carbon buildings.
